June is LGBTQIA+ Pride Month and you know what that means, weeks of rainbow drenched celebrations! The past two years of restrictions have limited events, but finally we can go all out and recognise the contributions of the LGBTQIA+ community, learn a little bit more about LGBTQIA+ history, celebrate diversity, and consider the ways that you can create a more inclusive society. With that in mind, we wanted to take the chance to help you get involved.
Spend some time learning about the history of Pride. Whether it’s picking up a book or watching a documentary, there are tons of resources you can use to learn something new about LGBTQIA+ history.
Do you know why we celebrate Pride in June? The Stonewall Riots which happened in June,1969, in New York are believed to be the starting point of the modern LGBTQIA+ movement. A year after the uprising, to mark the anniversary, the first pride marches were held in New York, LA and San Francisco.
Did you know? An American lady called Brenda Howard is known as 'The Mother of Pride' after organising the first ever gay pride march.
Pride month is about acceptance, equality, celebrating the work of LGBTQIA+ people, education in LGBTQIA+ history and raising awareness of issues affecting the LGBTQIA+ community. This is why many fly the rainbow flag and celebrate throughout the month.
You can give back to your community by volunteering or donating, there are plenty of charities/support groups that would really appreciate help where it’s needed, now more than ever before. Pride is all about being proud of who you are no matter who you love. Younger members of the LGBTQIA+ community can really benefit from love and support, you can make a difference! With covid restrictions lifted, you can take full advantage of the many Pride festivities, taking place across the UK and the world! And, they're not just in June, but all year round! The LGBTQIA+ community is bursting with creativity, there is so much passion and pride within its art and culture. Take some time to watch a LGBTQIA+ movie or show, listen to some music by an LGBTQIA+ artist. Don’t be afraid to venture into all the different forms, there is so much to choose from.
Some examples and suggestions include: It’s a Sin, Heartstopper, Sex Education, Orange is the New Black, Queer Eye and Pose, and a selection of LGBTQIA+ books.
