The Big Blue: Blue Health, Blue Carbon and Products made from Ocean-bound plastics.

Hey readers,
Take a deep breath….Ready?
Let’s take a deep dive (see what I did there?) into all things Ocean!

We’re pretty blessed that our HQ is situated in beautiful Cornwall, in the Southwest of the UK. The county of Cornwall has the honour of boasting Great Britain’s longest coastline. Its impressive coastline features many picturesque beaches and bays that stretch for a whopping 1,086 kilometers! This means that some of our Cornwall-based Fluid family are never far from the sea, and the sea is never far from their thoughts.

Health benefits of being by the sea

Everyone loves going to the seaside, right? Sand, sea, a gentle breeze and hopefully sunshine, the feeling of awe that you get when looking out upon a wide expanse of majestic Ocean, you exhale and you can feel your shoulders naturally drop.

But, did you know that being near the sea is actually scientifically proven to improve your health and well-being, our Brand Manager, Gemma Richards and Social Media Coordinator, Nicole Heffernan recently attended a B Corp local event, where amongst other fascinating speakers they listened to a talk from Dr. Lewis Elliot, Environmental Psychologist at the University of Exeter. His research looks at the recreational use of blue spaces (spaces near water) and their relationship with human health.

His slides and statistics were very inciteful and showed that how close people live in proximity to blue spaces and how often they visit them positively impacts public health and wellbeing. Right, we’re off to grab our buckets and spades to go and get some Vitamin Sea!!

Not only is the big blue good for our health and well-being, but it can also help with the fight against climate change. Blue carbon ecosystems such as salt marshes, seagrass meadows and mangroves act as a carbon sink, storing and removing carbon from our atmosphere. They can store up to 5 times more carbon per area than tropical rainforests!  Not only this, but they enhance biodiversity and help build resilience to climate change issues like flooding and tidal surges. Incredible!

Ocean-prevented plastics

With all of this in mind, we’ve recently been working on an Ocean-themed product pack for our VIP clients here at Fluid, with products made from ocean-prevented plastics. The specially curated pack includes everything you need for a day by the Ocean, a pen, notebook, water bottle, cooler bag, a Tony’s Chocolonely bar, sunglasses and a gorgeous hammam towel (made from 70% recycled cotton and 30% recycled polyester, crafted with SEAQUAL® YARN. The SEAQUAL INITIATIVE collaborates with ocean clean-ups globally, adding value to the waste they collect.).

So you sea, (sorry!) being near the sea is scientifically proven to be good for our health and well-being, fact

Blue carbon helps with our fight against climate change, encourages more biodiversity and helps us build resilience for coastal communities against ever-increasing threats like flooding and tidal surges. Amazing!Circular and Co. cup made from beach waste

So we need to make sure that we’re looking after our oceans so that our oceans can look after us! Want to take more action? There are some fabulous ocean-based charities you can get involved with that are on a mission to protect our seas. You could donate or get involved in community projects: Oceana & Surfers Against Sewage.
