Running the Argyle Community Trust’s Green Army Fun Run

Do you know what makes running fun?

No, it’s not new trainers or some truly awesome tunes (though those do help).

It’s knowing every stride, every breath, every “why did I sign up for this?” moment is helping a brilliant cause that’s changing lives right where you live.

And last week, three of our amazing team members did exactly that!

Kate Rowe, Hollie Jacobs, and Roy Hooper laced up for the Argyle Community Trust’s Green Army Fun Run - raising money for Project 35, a local initiative tackling child poverty in Plymouth, Devon, and Cornwall.

We caught up with the trio after their amazing feat (and checked in on their amazing feet) to find out how it all went - and what they learned about themselves along the way.

What’s the Argyle Community Trust?

The Argyle Community Trust is the official charity for Plymouth Argyle Football Club.

It aims to be an active, inspirational and inclusive community hub for the South West region.

Their Community Strategy builds on Argyle Community Trust’s desire to make a change to people’s lives using the power of Plymouth Argyle Football Club. The populations that they serve face barriers in relation to health, well-being, as well as in education and employment.

Running the Argyle Community Trust’s Green Army Fun Run

Firstly, what exactly is the Green Amy Fun Run?

Kate: “The Green Army Fun Run is a 5km charity race organised by Argyle Community Trust to raise money for Project 35, an initiative aimed at tackling poverty in Plymouth, Devon and Cornwall.”

Sounds amazing! What charity did you all decide to raise money for?

Kate: “We were raising money for Project 35, which is Plymouth Argyle’s social impact project for Plymouth and the surrounding areas.  Sadly, the charity is called ‘Project 35’ because 35% of the children in Plymouth are reported to be living in poverty.”

That sounds like a great charity. Why did you decide to take part in the run?

Roy: “I like to be active, and this was a good cause.”

Kate: “Because of Hollie, actually! I’m Hollie’s manager, and during one of our meetings, she mentioned that one of her personal goals was running a 5k before the end of 2025. I wanted to support her as best I could, so we signed up for this fun run together!”

Hollie: “Truthfully, I’ve been trying to find a new hobby for ages, and running is meant to be so good for clearing your mind, so I thought this was the best way to start!”

Right in at the deep end there! Did you train beforehand?

Hollie: “Considering 4 months ago I couldn’t even run for one minute, I knew I needed to put in some training!”

Roy: “Nah, 5k is lightwork for a guy like me.”

Kate: “Not as much as I should have - but I made it to the finish line!”

What was the route you had to run?

Kate: “The route started in Central Park, Plymouth and finished in the PAFC stadium. There was a bit of everything - park, pavements and a few surprise hills we weren’t expecting!”

Sounds… fun? How did the actual day go?!

Hollie: “It went so well, thanks! The route was definitely more of a challenge than I anticipated, but the sun was shining and the vibes were good!”

Kate: It went great - though my legs might disagree today!  The weather was perfect, and the atmosphere was amazing, plus we all crossed the finish line with smiles on our faces.”

Roy: “It went really well, it was a great morning for a jog."

Fantastic! And what was your highlight of the day?

Roy: “Waking up at 6:00 to travel an hour to Plymouth, who doesn’t love doing that on a Sunday morning?”

Kate: “My highlight was definitely crossing the finish line together as a team!”

Hollie: “My highlight was seeing my mum and dad at the finish line waiting for me.”

After everything, would you do the run again?

All three: “Absolutely!”

And, what did you learn about yourself through this experience?

Roy: “I enjoy running with people to talk to! Makes it much more fun.”

Hollie: “It's so much easier to stay motivated when you have an end goal to achieve.”

Kate: “I learnt that it's easier to stay motivated when you’ve got great team mates and support around you. I also wanted to add - as Hollie’s manager, I'm so proud that she’s managed to achieve this goal. Hollie has got the medal and finishers' t-shirt to prove that she can achieve anything!”

Make every moment monumental

Well done, guys!

We believe in dreaming big, acting boldly, and lifting each other up, whether that’s through meaningful merchandise or supporting causes close to home.

Roy, Hollie, and Kate showed how small steps can make a huge difference.

If you’d like to help keep that momentum going, you can donate now via the link below - and you too can help fight child poverty with Project 35.

P.S. This will be match-funded by Fluid, too!
