8 FREE ways to stay cosy this winter

Cosy bedroom with blankets

With energy prices set to rise by around 5% from January 2024, we’re all looking for ways to stay warm without having to reach for the thermostat this winter.

We’ve put together our 8 favourite ways to stay cosy this winter that won’t cost you a penny!

1. Layer up
Whether you’re working from home for the day or spending the evening in front of the TV, avoid getting chilly by layering up. Add a base layer of thermals or a long-sleeve top, and add cosy knits or fleeces on top - natural fibres work the best at keeping the heat in.

2. Get moving
Head outside for a brisk walk, dance around the kitchen, or pop on a YouTube workout - warm up by moving your body in whichever way feels best for you!

3. Make a hot drink
Tea, coffee or hot chocolate, a hot drink will warm you up as you drink it - plus you can keep your hands toasty around the mug! If you’re out and about make up a flask of your favourite beverage to warm up as and when you need.

4. Opening and closing curtains
Light hours may be few and far between during the winter months in the UK, but make use of the heat from any sunshine we do get by opening your curtains as soon as it’s light. Just be sure to shut them as it turns dusky outside to keep the warmth in for the evening.

5. Rearrange furniture
Have a look at the rooms you spend the most time in, make sure sofas and chairs aren’t against external walls as you’re more likely to feel the chill from outside and ensure radiators aren’t blocked so the heat can spread effectively throughout the space.

6. Wear cosy slippers
Keeping your feet warm can make all the difference when it gets chilly at home, wrap up with thick socks and a pair of fluffy slippers!

7. Eat warm meals
Swap salads and sandwiches for soups, stews and spice! A hot meal will do wonders for warming up a cosy night in, plus by cooking on the stove you’ll warm up your space too! If you use the oven, make use of the heat by opening the door once you’ve turned it off.

8. Double up on bedding
Got a spare set of bedding for when you have guests to stay? Drag extra blankets and duvets from the spare room and double up on extra cold nights. Make sure you have lots of blankets and throws available on the sofa too as you’re most likely to feel the cold when you’re sitting for long periods of time.
