6 eco-friendly ways to stay warm

1) Break up with your thermostat
During the winter, it’s estimated that 2.7 million households have their thermostat set at 25℃ or more. Keeping our homes below 20℃ is much better for our planet, whilst still being a pleasant temperature.

Why not change your settings so that your heating comes on a little later in the morning? If you’re worried that you’ll still be cold if you turn your thermostat down, don’t be! There are so many other alternative ways you can keep warm.

For example, that hot water bottle you’ve got stashed in the back of your wardrobe is perfect for keeping you toasty, without wasting any heat. hot water bottle

2) Embrace a Hygge lifestyle
Hygge is all about being cosy without harming the environment. It’s a Danish term that means finding comfort in the simple things; think the warming glow of your favourite lamp or the gentle flicker of a new candle on a dark evening. Soft lighting is the key to Hygge's cosiness. Check out our keeping cosy brochure for more Hygge inspiration.

3) Layers, layers, and more layers
Jumpers and sweaters are great at keeping you warm because they focus on keeping your core insulated. Just throw on a jumper and you’re ready to go - you’ll never be chilly again! But, if you find a jumper isn’t enough, there’s no harm in throwing on an extra layer or two. Hats are great, plus a blanket or two would keep you really cosy. That’s because these multiple layers trap little pockets of air, which act as natural insulation. 8-2

4) Warm up your daily routines
There’s no greater way to feel instantly warmer than with a big, hearty meal. Your family’s secret recipe stew: thick and bubbling in a big old pot? Or, how about a spicy curry? Both can be the perfect antidote to a cold winter’s evening.

By changing up the meals you eat depending on the time of year, you’ll be able to keep warm whilst being eco-conscious. Eating seasonally and locally is a great way to make strides toward a more sustainable lifestyle.

5) Create your own heat
It’s not just about changing up your diet this time of year, either. Thinking about how you exercise can also be a way of keeping warm. Yoga is great for some gentle, warming movement. Light some candles, get your yoga mat out and you’re ready to go. Or, take on a cardio challenge to create some real heat.

6) Embrace your daily dose of Vitamin D
Don’t ignore the biggest, natural, heat source we all have access to -  the sun! As soon as it shines, open those curtains and get that light in. blog images (1)

You’ll soon feel how quickly it’ll heat up your room (plus, the extra daylight will be excellent for improving your mental health in the colder months).

Just remember to shut the curtains once the sun moves on to retain the heat for longer.
