Race for Life 2023: Our stories

Written by Natasha Ithildin | May 10, 2023 2:15:00 PM

We love it when our team get involved with projects they feel passionate about!

At Fluid, we’re all about supporting causes that need our help.

We’ve recently raised funds for the Turkey/Syria Earthquake Appeal, and we’re constantly looking for opportunities to make a difference.

So, when it came to our attention that three of our team members were participating in Race for Life near our HQ on the 21st of May, we couldn’t wait to help them out. Here are their stories.

What’s Race for Life?

One of the biggest fundraising events in the Cancer Research UK calendar, Race for Life includes 3k, 5k and even 10k running routes all across the country with the aim of raising funds for cancer research.

The first race was held in 1994 in Battersea, where 750 participants raised an amazing £48,000. This has now grown to numerous events across the country. To date, events have raised over £940 million towards beating cancer - an absolutely amazing achievement.

Race for Life 2023: Our stories

Charlie’s Race for Life story

Junior Developer, Cornwall
1. What's your biggest driving factor/inspiration for this run?

“I've always been eager to do charity events and raise funding for a good cause but I've never been athletic enough until recently. I'm excited to test myself and to do so for a good cause.”

2. How are you training/preparing for the run?

“I've been training for the run by keeping myself as active as possible. Walking and jogging when I would otherwise catch a bus, and slowly jogging for longer periods of time on the weekends.”

3. Have you set any personal goals for the run, such as finishing within a certain time or running a certain distance?

“In all honesty, my main goal is to finish the run! And do so whilst maintaining a respectable pace.”

“I've never done anything like this in my life, and it's a long call from the incredibly unathletic person I was last year.”

Roy's Race for Life story

Junior IT Technician, Cornwall
1. What's your biggest driving factor/inspiration for this run?

“My mum had breast cancer and I’ve seen the pressures that cancer can put on a family first-hand - the emotional and physical toll it takes, not only on the patient but their support network, too. That’s why I want to run and raise money: to try and help support families that are going through what we did.”

2. How are you training/preparing for the run?

“I’m not - I'm actually Mo Farah’s second cousin so naturally I'm already in great shape! But, jokes aside, I’m doing it to raise awareness and money for vital research, so even if I come last I would still have succeeded.”

3. Have you set any personal goals for the run, such as finishing within a certain time or running a certain distance?

“I’m determined to finish the race and not walk any of it! I’ll continue running no matter what (and, of course, racing Charlie).”

Adrian’s Race for Life story

Systems Developer, Cornwall
1. What's your biggest driving factor/inspiration for this run?

“I think it goes without saying, but cancer is something that needs to be stopped. By running the race, I’m helping to raise money towards beating the disease but also helping to provide care for those affected.”

2. How are you training/preparing for the run?

“I’ve been trying to incorporate running into my daily routine - before or after work. I’m not going too crazy, just trying to slowly up my general fitness.”

3. Have you set any personal goals for the run, such as finishing within a certain time or running a certain distance?

“I’m using this opportunity as a milestone on my running journey. I’m hoping to learn from it and develop as a runner, and then hopefully in the future I’ll be able to complete a half marathon!”

On Your Feet Britain

And we cannot mention Charlie’s Race for Life story without congratulating him on his recent achievement: walking the most steps in Fluid over a week for our On Your Feet Britain competition! He ended up walking a whopping 125,144 steps! Congratulations again, Charlie!

On Your Feet Britain was a recent initiative launched to encourage office workers to move more. We thought what better way to get people moving than to organise a competition over the week to see how many steps our team could achieve. It was a week of sore feet and adventures, that’s for sure!

Our original goal was to walk 250,000 steps over the course of a week. We ended up smashing this and walking a combined total of 2,097,167 steps! An insane amount, but definitely an amazing achievement.

We hope our team are encouraged to keep moving and supporting those getting fit for a good cause.

We’re more than just merchandise

We understand that we’re accountable for the health and happiness of our team. That’s why we’re a tight-knit bunch, always looking out for each other. And we love to champion those that are making Fluid such a wonderful place to work.

We’re here to encourage our team to get involved with raising funds for causes and charities they feel passionate about, whatever that means to them!
