It’s rubbish: introducing Gomi

A man holding a Gomi colourful recycled plastic powerbank up to the camera.

And that’s because ‘Gomi’ means ‘rubbish’ in Japanese!

Gomi is only rubbish by name, never by nature, because they make the most wonderful power banks and speakers out of ‘rubbish’ plastic.

Meet Gomi, the brand that makes tech almost entirely from post-consumer waste.

Their unique trademark colour splashes make their products a fantastic solution for repurposing old waste into something new and amazing.

Keep reading to find out exactly what Gomi do, how they do it, and why we think you’ll love them!

In short...

Gomi turns everyday waste — plastic bags, e-bike batteries, even broken Barbie dolls — into handmade, one-of-a-kind power banks, chargers, tracker tags and speakers, built to last and built to be fixed.

Tech gifts with a story worth telling, basically.

Who is Gomi?

Where we may see rubbish, Gomi sees possibilities.

Gomi’s mission

Gomi’s mission is to make beautiful products that last.

Why you’ll love Gomi

1. Gomi for Life

Fighting obsolescence, one fix at a time.

Gomi believes that throwaway culture is broken; that’s why they’ll fix your Gomi product if something ever goes wrong with it.

As part of their commitment to reducing waste, Gomi offer a repair service for all Gomi owners. They’ll fix anything within their 2-year warranty for free, but standard repairs outside the warranty period will never cost more than £20 for power banks or wireless chargers and £50 for speakers for customers in the UK.

Yay!

2. Insane bespoke designs

Looking for tech that’s completely eye-catching and utterly beautiful?

Well, you’ve just found it!

Gomi’s colourful works of art are appealing to both minimalists and maximalists alike. The designers knead, stretch, and press the plastic material together by hand, so two products are never, ever the same.

The custom colourways come in an array of beautiful blue hues, pretty pinks, burnt oranges and deep purples, as well as vibrant multi-coloured and monochrome one-of-a-kind patterns.

And that’s because, with Gomi, everyday essentials don’t need to be boring

Plastic is beautiful, it’s just misunderstood.

Tom, Gomi

3. Made with recycled plastic

Did you know that every year, the UK throws away 300 million kilograms of flexible plastics?

And that’s just the UK.

That’s plastic like shopping bags, bubble wrap, and industrial packaging, all of which have been deemed ‘non-recyclable’ by UK councils.

gomi update (3)

At Gomi, they’ve come up with an ingenious way of recycling these flexible plastics, turning them into raw materials.

And now, the equivalent of 44 plastic bags goes into making each one of their speakers, saving a lot of plastic from landfills.

4. Championing sustainable power

Gomi is seriously pushing the boat out when it comes to making their products sustainable.

Or should we say bike?

Because that’s where their batteries come from - they take healthy batteries from damaged e-bikes and use them to power their products.

Batteries are notoriously difficult to recycle, meaning they often end up in landfills.

On top of this, mining for new lithium often takes place under poor conditions for workers, presenting serious humanitarian issues.

That's why Gomi have chosen to do things differently.

5. Replaceable parts

When it comes to their speakers, all 29 of their components are replaceable, so if something goes wrong, you just have to let Gomi know, and they’ll do their best to fix it!

6. Super energy and water efficient

Their speakers use less energy (-26%) and less water (-25%) than competitors to manufacture, meaning at every stage of the production process, their speakers are better for the environment.

7. Trade in your old Gomi speaker

And bonus: when you’re looking to change up your speaker, you can trade in your old Gomi one for a new one, lowering tech waste even more

8. Completely circular

Damaged beyond repair? Gomi will salvage the possible parts from your Gomi product.

And if it can’t be salvaged? They’ll recycle it for you. Phew!

9. Carbon neutral

Gomi offsets the CO2 emissions required to make their products, meaning Gomi are completely carbon neutral as a brand.

Awesome brand collaborations

Not only are Gomi super creative and awe-inspiring, but they’ve actually collaborated with some amazing brands and created some super unique products for them.

1. Ocean Bottle

We love their collab with Ocean Bottle (another one of our amazing suppliers). They’ve created a limited run of 10,000 mAh power banks and Bluetooth speakers made from recycled materials, where 15% of each sale funds the collection of ocean-bound plastic bottles. Yippee!

2. Vans

A reel of the Gomi and Vans collaboration.

Then there was their Vans collab, where Gomi were able to recreate their signature checkerboard design into limited edition powerbanks and speakers.

3. Paul Smith

And we have to mention their collab with Paul Smith, too. Working closely with the Paul Smith design team, Gomi were able to create a one-of-a-kind surface pattern - all handmade from recycled waste plastic material (including some of Paul Smith’s offcuts).

4. Barbie

And, finally, our personal favourite - Barbie!

Gomi reached out to their community over a newsletter, asking for broken dolls to be sent in for recycling. They then turned this waste plastic into a limited batch of Gomi speakers made from recycled dolls, which they launched in celebration of the release of the Barbie movie.

And the name of this collection? Childhood Memories.

Aww.

Gomi FAQs

1. What is Gomi, and what does the name mean?

Gomi is a sustainable tech brand based in Brighton that makes power banks, speakers, chargers and tracker tags from post-consumer waste plastic. "Gomi" means "rubbish" in Japanese — a nod to the fact that everything they make starts life as something someone else threw away.

2. What materials do Gomi products use?

Mostly flexible plastics that UK councils class as non-recyclable, like shopping bags and industrial packaging, plus second-life batteries salvaged from damaged e-bikes. Each speaker uses the equivalent of 44 plastic bags' worth of plastic.

3. Can I get Gomi products branded for my company?

Yes! Gomi can Pantone-match your brand colours and engrave your logo, with a turnaround of around 2 weeks from artwork approval. They can even use your own business's waste plastic to make your order, if you fancy a truly bespoke sustainability story.

4. Is every Gomi product genuinely one-of-a-kind?

Pretty much. Because each item is shaped by hand from recycled material, no two products come out exactly the same — Gomi calls this "One of One." For branded orders, colours are matched to your palette, but that same handmade individuality still shines through.

5. What happens if my Gomi product breaks?

Gomi will fix it. Everything's covered by a 2-year warranty, and after that, standard repairs are capped at £20 for power banks and wireless chargers, and £50 for speakers (UK customers). If something's beyond repair, they'll salvage what they can and recycle the rest.

6. Are Gomi products actually better for the environment, or is it just marketing?

The numbers back it up: Gomi speakers use 26% less energy and 25% less water to manufacture than competitors, the brand offsets its CO2 emissions to stay carbon neutral, and their repair/trade-in/recycle scheme is designed to keep products out of landfill for good.

7. Has Gomi worked with any well-known brands?

Yes — collaborations include Ocean Bottle, Vans, Paul Smith, and a Barbie-themed range made from recycled dolls sent in by their own community.

Go, Gomi!

Gomi are ready and waiting to make your tech (and rubbish) a work of art!
